The Callaghan crew!
Lots of Dunbars and Sumners!
A couple of years of dating and realizing we were inseparable, we started to discuss marriage and the future. The proposal itself was not entirely a surprise but the where and when was.
Last summer we rented a cottage in the Laurentiens for our vacation. After a day of kayaking on the lake and having a wonderful day, we were looking out at the beautiful sunset over the lake. Dave said he had to go into the house for a minute and when he came back outside, he dropped down to one knee and asked me to spend my life with him! All I could think of to say was YES, YES, YES!
There's a story behind Jen's ring.
Before my mom died, she told me that she wanted to give me a ring and she wanted me to wear it. This was an odd wish, given that it was a woman's ring -- a gold band set with the diamond from her mother's engagement ring. This was all very sentimental, as mom's family were jewlers from way back. I felt funny about not wearing the ring, but as it turned out there was nothing to worry about. Life has a way of setting things to rights and mom got her way, just not as anyone expected.
Fast forward a few years to me in the jewelry store, picking out Jen's engagement ring. It took a fair bit of looking in a few different places before I found the right one. A few days later I had one of those middle of the night AhHa! moments: maybe the diamond in mom's ring -- which was sitting in a dusty box in a closet -- would fit the setting for Jen's ring? And it did -- perfectly!
We took the gold from the leftover band, and turned that into my wedding ring. We are really touched by the symoblism that in a way we are wearing the same ring, and it felt absolutely right to give that diamond to Jen.
We met on a blind date -- just like Dave's parents did many years before.
Dave had a small role in Ottawa's Lawyer Play, a charity event that the local bar puts on every year to raise many for a worthy cause. Also in the cast was Paula Callaghan, Jen's sister. Paula decided to play matchmaker, showed Dave a picture of Jen on her iphone, and asked if he'd like to meet her.
Dave said yes, and Paula introduced us the modern way -- via our cell phones.
We texted first, then talked, and then had a fantastic and very romantic first date at a restaurant in Montreal's Old Port.
We like to say it was the best first date ever -- yes, even better than the one Dave's parents went on! Four years later we feel like we are still on it.
I grew up on a farm outside of a tiny town called Ethel, Ontario with my mom and dad and my wonderful sister Becky. For the last 27 years I’ve lived in Ottawa where I work as a lawyer for the Department of Justice.
I have two fantastic kids – Matthew and Harriet – who are both off at university. It makes me unbelievably proud to see them grown up and creating exciting lives for themselves. They’ll be helping us celebrate our big day, along with the rest of our gang. Mom and Dad are no longer with us, and it won’t be quite the same without Dad there to play us down the aisle, but they’ll be with us in spirit. I’ll even be wearing Dad’s kilt as a way of showing they are always in our hearts.
The Callaghan clan has welcomed me with open arms, and I am touched by how they’ve accepted me as one of their own. I think we must share the same kind of crazy! It is incredibly exciting to be starting this new chapter in our lives together – I’m looking forward to many happy days with Jen, Maddy, Matthew, Harriet and our extended families.
Many thanks to everyone who is travelling from afar to help us celebrate! Welcome to Montreal and let’s have fun!
I was born in Montreal, have lived here most of my life and it's where I call home.
I am the youngest of five, and my family is very close. My sisters Bridget, Paula, and brother Brian will be helping us celebrate our big day. Our parents Angus, Rita, and brother Raymond will be in our hearts.
My daughter Maddy is in high school and is the apple of my eye and we couldn't be more excited to blend our little family of 2 with Dave, Matthew and Harriet.
I have been working at McGill University for the past dozen years and I love it. Lately, I've been consumed with wedding planning - I never imagined what effort goes in to planning one perfect day! Even if everything goes wrong, the only thing I really care about is having this day with my loved ones and marrying the man of my dreams! I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with him!
We mentioned to many of you that we had rented a cottage near Tremblant for the two weeks after the wedding. Well... that has changed.
We have cancelled the cottage. (Boo!)
But, we have bought a house! (Yay!)
Our new place is in Hudson, Que, about 60Km outside of Montreal. We will now have a pool and a nice big patio, and plenty of room for people to come visit! It didn't make any sense to rent a cottage when we'll be so eager to be in our new home, setting it up and making it ours.
So, come visit us! We'll be at 3357 Rue Rosalie, Vaudreuil Dorion starting the beginning of July!
